Walruses are large marine mammals native to the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. They are characterized by their long tusks, which are elongated canine teeth that are primarily used for defense, cutting breathing holes in ice, and helping them haul out onto ice floes. Walruses are excellent swimmers and can dive to great depths in search of their favorite prey, including clams, mollusks, and other bottom-dwelling organisms. They are social animals, often forming large haul-outs on ice or land during rest periods. Walruses are classified as vulnerable due to the ongoing loss of sea ice caused by climate change.
